… balance

by Ali on June 25, 2011

There is a natural balance to everything.  The equilibrium of life.  The yin and the yang.  I believe it is true for the big picture as well as all the little element that combine to create that picture.  Like training, for me, I have gotten the best results when I had a really balanced training plan.  Running, cross training, stretching and rest.  Nothing in excess, nothing lacking.

The same rule applies to life and work.  Yes there can be too much of a good thing, just ask Lindsay Lohen’s liver

At the moment mine is not in balance.  Far from it.  We have a few huge projects at work, they are all consuming with the workload and looming deadlines.  For the most part I don’t mind, actually I love it.  The projects are exciting and creative, the kinda stuff  I thrive on.  However, after almost 3 months of working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day for most of the week I am seriously out of balance.  I can’t keep all the balls in the air on this type of work schedule.  The first one to get dropped was blogging.  Maybe you noticed.  It was an easy ball to drop, when your day starts at 6:15am checking and responding to social media for work, followed by 10 hours in front of a computer screen, then another couple hours at home in front of the computer, plus more social media checking before lights out, the last thing I want to do in my precious few hours of me time is sit in front of the computer … even if it is called Matty.

The second ball to get dropped was running.  If you only have a couple hours a day, even when my every intention is to lace up my running shoes, somehow the couch wins.  The third ball fell soon after, sleep.  When I am not running, I don’t have a stress release, or burned off energy to help me relax.  Too much stress, energy and not relaxed translate into tossing and turning with too much on your mind and very little sleep.

Eventually it all catches up.  Like this morning.  I feel like crap.  Achy from head to toe, tired, congested.  Had to cut my run short, head home and crawl into bed.  Forced balance.

Good news there is light, slightly dim but growing brighter at the end of this tunnel.  Only 5 more crazy days of working, then some well deserved self imposed balance will begin.

What ball do you drop first?
