I am not a car person. And by that I mean, I don’t really care to much about it other than the colour and I want to feel safe in it.
I’ve had the same car for almost 10 years. I bought it just after I moved back from England. It was summer in Canada, but not a particularly hot one. I remember this because I didn’t get air conditioning. Yes, the salesmen asked, double and triple checked.
I don’t need that! Oh look at the pretty silver colour.
I know. It’s 40 degrees out. I know. But in fairness, I’d been living in England where it hit 29 degrees (sorry don’t speak american) once in 10 years, so I was all, air conditioning, who needs that. Not me.
The car arrived. All pretty and silver. Sparkly. I drove it off the lot windows down, stereo blaring, looking cool. The next day temps soared to 35 and stayed there for weeks.
Other than the odd sweatfest, I love my little honda, plus it doesn’t cost me anything other than insurance and gas, a new set of tires and some brakes. But as it gets to the ripe old age of 10, things are naturally going to start to fall apart. Then it will begin costing me money and I will care.
Now seems like a great time to get a new car. This time I thought I better put a little more thought into this time …
My first choice was a Honda CRV, but it only comes in automatic. So it’s a no.
MUST HAVES …
pretty colour
air conditioning
manual transmission
Candidates
Hyundai Tucson. My dad’s recommendation. At first I was all no, don’t think so. But now I really like it. It comes with everything you could think of.
Santa Fe … the next model up from the Tucson.
Subaru Forester … which just sounds cool. Forester.
Honda Fit … the smallest of the candidates, but it’s so cute! And for the same price, less infact, I can add all the bells and whistles. Maybe even those neon blue exterior lights under the car and spinney wheels!
or ….
Herbie … I’ve always wanted a herbie bug.
What would you pick?

forester.
it’s been around for almost 13 years, and, since it’s on its third revision of the model, it has solid design and testing behind it. it has a great engine, sharing aspects with the wrx [ooh, sporty!] and is standard with awd.
it has pretty colours.
it has air conditioning.
it has manual transmission [with incline start assistance!]
it also comes with an optional pre-programmed route mode. you pre-drive a route and it records the gps, cross referencing with signal and intersection records in the ita [international travel archive] and grabbing the ir signal from intersections and can wirelessly drive the route. this is great for you. seeing as how you’ll be operating the vehicle after your long runs [not able to use your legs and/or think] and after your MANY benders [to drunk to see].
plus, it has a huge trunk area. plenty of room for me to hide in.
I have a Hyundai CAR and I LOVE IT! I had a dodge and a ford vehicle before and the Hyundai is so much better on gas, maintenance, everything!!
So I vote for the Hyundai! Good luck
I can picture you in the Beetle, especially with the air-conditioning on full and the top down.
i vote honda fit…but that’s cause i’m a sucker for small cars and go absolutely crazy for hatch-backs. my first car was a bright blue ford festiva (very different than the hot new version the fiesta) and it was so small and fabulous. i drove it for years!
I’m with you…I’m not a car person either. I need something small, colorful, and a car with a GPS. The bug is one of my favorites, still. I had one in high school that was orange and it was my dream car!!
That Honda is nice though, it seems like it would fit you well!! Let us know what you decide!
Not the Subaru, just looks yuk (despite the name!)… VW would be cool (in several ways), but for me wouldn’t do as I couldn’t put my bike in it..LOL!
I liked the first one (it looks neat – and that’s what is important isn’t it – looks I mean… LOL!)
Oooo, I’d get the Honda Fit, but then I’m very (very) easily swayed by the pictures. I liked the colour of the Fit best. Plus I love wee cars – they just seem to zip about. Santa Fe would be my second choice. So exciting – brand new wheels – !!
OHHH i like the bug. I’m a crazy hybrid person myslef, don’t have one but really want one… I know, I know stupid cruchy granola people
My brother has the Santa Fe and he doesn’t like it. If you NEED a 4WD wagon, go for the Forester, BUT they’re heavy on petrol (as are all soft roaders).
I’d go for the Honda. I have a City, just like this one:

Same colour too – basically the same car as the Fit, but with a boot. Very cheap on petrol, reliable, goes well enough, great sound system. Only problem is smallish petrol tank – a range of about 550 ks.
