WORKOUT: long run – 18.4 miles – 3.04 – avg pace 9.59 min/mile
I’ll keep this short, since it’s whiney, only thing worse than a whiney post is a long, rambling, self-indulgent post.
I don’t remember really aching during or after long runs this summer. I must have. Maybe I took more drugs, that either helped the pain or dulled my memory.
Yesterday I hurt …………….. from about halfway ……………. On an 18 miler that’s a long way.
I wanted to be done. More than I wanted the Oscars to be done after watching for 18 minutes.
The entire last mile I hobbled, cursed, and swore that I was out, it was over, I am done with running.
Then after a hot shower, my legs began to function again and the second round of Advil kicked in, I felt a tiny bit better. Numb and floaty, but better.
Must think positive happy thoughts …
J and I are holding our own with faster people and 5 out of the last 6 miles were the fastest of the run. (Don’t be thinking for one second that was a plan, it was completely fuelled by the desire to end my pain and suffering.)
If you are new to running or came here looking for inspiration, I’m sorry, come back mid-May, this ridiculous training will be over and I’ll be much .. much happier.

Pretty fast pace for being so miserable! I’m impressed. I’ve been feeling really achy in the legs during my long runs lately too . . . when you find the good drugs again, let me know.
fuel. hydration.
those are the two keys. lack those and the muscle fatigue pain will kill ya. take a quick look at the past week and see where the bulk of your calories were coming from. did you get lots of natural carbs? like tons of fruit and veggies [with a good chunk of complex carbs from tubers and maybe even some whole grain stuff?]. how about fluids? getting plenty of water? and what about potassium and sodium rich foods?
sleep.
i’m confident that you were getting 7-8 hours a night. i mean, i could see you in bed w/ the night vision goggles, so i’m not concerned on this front.
miles.
what did the rest of your workouts look like this week? any major difference in your schedule, like a new workout type or a big jump in distance? like, maybe a 10mi tempo? hmm?
don’t beat yourself up, ali. bad runs happen, but they don’t happen every time. it just means that your next run won’t need much effort to be significantly better than this one. see? it’s all good!
Oh gosh. I think everyone has a least one long run like this, right? Happy the shower made you feel better!
I cannot believe I made it through 2.5 hours of the Oscars. B-O-R-I-N-G!
Hey, you ran 18 MILES! And you would have been a heck of a lot unhappier if you didn’t do it. You did an awesome pace too. Great job!
I didn’t enjoy the Oscars this year, figured it was because I only saw 2 of the movies. I was really happy Sandra won.
18 miles I would not be able to walk or talk.
Long runs are hard, even on perfect days. Just get ‘em done (and never think you’ll be feeling that bad in a marathon).
You were 1 sec per km faster than us for our 19 miles. That’s a good training pace.
Hummmm, I remember having a running day like that once…..
sas … ahhh … the I am trapped upstairs in my own home, because I don’t have the energy or pain tolerance to go downstairs.
I miss those days.
