… day … uhmm

by Ali on December 20, 2009

I’ve lost count of what day I am up to.  I do know I am in the second half of my cycle which is probably why I’m over this little project.  Apparently you spend the first 14 days planning, joining committees, saying yes to invites and signing up for races.  Then the second half regretting questioning those decisions … I’m there.

Just throwing it out there … but the next 10 days of posting might have a slightly different tone.

I’ve run the last 5 days.

Okay, slight stretch with 5 and run.

Wednesday I went out with the intention of 3 miles but after 8 minutes of -20/-4 winds that ripped through my 6 layers I bailed.  So I probably  ran 1.5 miles, but for intention let’s round that up to a nice round 2.  On Thursday we had our annual pub run.  We run to 5 different bars and have a drink in each.  The run took 5 hours and maybe covered 3k.  Like I said … a stretch.

Friday and Saturday I did actual ‘runs’.  They were short but tested out the toe.  The worst part is still getting the shoe on.  It takes about a minute for the toe to adjust  and accept it’s new surrounds or go numb  When I am running it feels okay.

Here’s the latest pic of the toe.  The bruise has now moved to the top of my foot????  Ignore the badly in need of a pedicure toe nail.  I’ve thought about pampering my feet, but just the thought of touching this toe makes me shudder!

7 days after toe stubbing.

This morning the wind chill was gone making it a balmy -5/23 degrees.  I joined the group and opted for 8 miles. A perfect distance for tragic toe and you don’t need a water belt .. can I get a hallelujah!

I had a sports bra, 2 long sleeves and a short sleeve, a vest and tights on.  I didn’t wear a hat of head band, think maybe I should have.  I was coldish, not freezing I definitely get warmer when I am running, but by the time I got home I am cold to the point of shivering.  I’ve had a hot shower, put on my warmest sweats and two pairs of socks and my bones are still cold.

I don’t remember feeling the cold like this before, maybe I blocked it out like a life threatening trauma.

What do you wear for cold weather running?

Your poor toe!

I have been feeling like that after my runs too. I feel great when I am out but it takes me forever to warm up after the shower. I have a sweater AND a sweatshirt on right now!

For cold weather warming I do a base of Under Armour top and tights, and warm weather socks. Then depending on the temp, I add more layers. Sometimes a lot more!

Your toe needs some Christmas-tizing…maybe some snappy green sparkly polish to match your pub run fun! Love your blog title by the way!
I am a wimpy California girl so I have zero advice on winter running wear but I do admire and respect all of you snow bunny runners, brrr!

Oh my…your poor toe and foot. I don’t remember it being this cold last year so early but we did have way more snow then. Yesterday’s run was -7ish but no wind so I had one layer on the bottom (tights) and on top a tight baselayer top, a warmer longsleeve and a wind jacket. As usual, I was warm on top and my butt was cold. I need to look into thermal underwear….

Wear a hat! All the heat escapes from your head. Unless you don’t want to mess up your hair, then suck up the cold and look good.

I bring clothes with me, and change out of the cold sweaty stuff as soon as I am done running. It helps stopping the shivers.

In regular ol’ life I am constantly cold, and wear a hat (even indoors) from November till June. Which makes my cold weather running gear a little odd: if it’s above 35 I wear a tank top and shorts, below 35 add tights and a light running jacket, which more often than not ends up tied around my waist. -4 though? I’m inside under a down comforter. You are some kind of tough!

you’re on day 20, ali. it says so here in the period tracker on my iphone.

the toe is looking better and the added colour that you’re getting spread along the foot is a good sign that the tissue is healing. it gets more colourful as it gets better. go figure.

following your cycle in blog form is cracking me up because i think we’ve seen all these stages of your personality over the years and now we can pin down exactly where and why.

to answer the cold weather gear, here’s how my layers stack up. HAHA! layers! stack up! i kill myself.

short sleeve shirt w/ arm warmers
long sleeve shirt
long sleeve light fleece shirt
wp shell [unlined if above zero, lined if below zero]
fleece or wool gloves
wp glove shell if below zero

compression shorts
stretch fleece tights [above zero and below 40]
lined stretch fleece tights w/ wind barrier [below zero]
rain pants [-15 or below]

light fleece beanie for above zero
fleece balaclava hood for below zero

i have to say, though, for guys, sometimes even a 50 deg run can turn hazardous if the wind and perspiration conditions are right. wet running shorts and a stiff [HAHA!] wind can cause weinerbite in flash. i’ll often stuff an extra glove or sock in a pocket just in case. but, usually, as long as my upper body and core are warm, i can let my legs freeze a little bit.

I hate how cold I get right after running in the winter – it doesn’t seem to matter what I wear, I just freeze as soon as I get in the house.

1.5 miles counts as running. It does, it does.
