… save the knee … save the world

by Ali on March 28, 2010

I had a plan to run around the bay, that would get me to the finish and cause minimal damage to my bum knee.

Run the flat sections as fast as possible, run the hills and walk the downhills.  I was 99% onboard with the save the knee plan, but there was a little hope.  A 1% hope that knee was cured.  So, instead of going all out for the first 20k, I ran it like I would be able to run all the way.

My 1% hope grew with every km that went by.  Until I hit the open metal grate bridge, then my knee reminded me what torture it could inflict upon me.

I thought I could run the hills.  No.  Actually I could have, but I was mostly using my left leg and dragging bum leg with me.  If I keep that up for 10k I would have 2 bum legs.

That’s when I embraced my save the knee save the world plan once again.  I walked up.  I walked down.  When it was flat I ran as fast as I could.  Then I walked some more.  About 7k of more.

On the plus side, when you walk you recuperate so when I got the op to run I felt really strong.

I finished happy, and able to walk!

Bonus round … I still had a 5 minute pb.

Not to shabby for bummed knee.

Although the walking saved my knee, it created these two beauties.

Aren’t they pretty.

… the knee plan

by Ali on March 26, 2010

I did just over 4 miles last night with the group. There were a few up and downhills to test out my knee, no pain.

FABULOUS!

There is a general throbbing around the knee area, it’s undetermined whether this is real or paranoid sensation created to torment me.

This morning my knee and leg are both tender, especially where the bionic implant electrode were placed. It became worse when I looked at the weather for Sunday

Sunday
Light rain
P.O.P. 70%
HIGH 6°C
LOW 3°C
Wind S 25 km/h
24-Hr Rain 10-15 mm

Ha! I laugh and mother nature and knee pain.  (Especially from a seated position indoors)

I am running Around the Bay.

I know I can do the first 20k, it’s flat.  That just leaves 10k.  Unfortunately it’s 10k of hills which will test out the knee and my mind.  It should be okay on the uphill, I can always walk the downhills if the pain comes back.

That’s my plan!

… bionic leg

by Ali on March 24, 2010

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him Ali.   We have the technology.   We have the capability to build the world’s first bionic man Ali.   We can make him Ali better than he she was before.

Better, stronger, faster.

Dr Magic hooked the muscle stimulating machine up to my quad today.  It pulses for 30 seconds, then surges.  The surges contracts the muscle and lifts your leg up.

… I heart the roller

March 21, 2010

when I couldn’t straighten my leg or walk up stairs, I was itching to run.  I kept thinking, yeah it hurts, but maybe, maybe if I run a little it will work itself out. But I didn’t.  I haven’t even gone to yoga, for fear for balancing on my leg might strain it even more. [...]

… the exercises

March 19, 2010

do not let it fool you …. this is a torture device. It looks innocent, almost inviting, but you’ll change your mind after 10 minutes of rolling your quads.  2 minutes brought tears to my eyes. I didn’t think I would be able to handle it, I’m a flower. The first 5 minutes were horrible. [...]

… knee bone connected to the thigh bone

March 18, 2010

I had a session with Dr Magic yesterday to find out what is wrong with my knee and fix it. The Problem My knee hurts behind my knee cap, in the middle.  It starts at the bottom and moves to the top. I can walk okay, no pain. I can’t put weight on it to [...]

… and she hobbles to take gold

March 14, 2010

On Saturday a bunch of us headed to Lucan, 30 minutes outside of town, for the Shamrock Running Clubs St Patricks Day Fun Run. The weather was horrible.  Pouring rain turning to ice, and 50km winds.  But when you finished there was free beer and irish stew!  Pure Irish motivation …  and it worked.  I [...]

… lost?

March 10, 2010

We decided to give the indoor track workout a go last night. On tap a pyramid workout. I’ve done a similar workout, but the new coach running the session goes for more mileage at a slower pace. We were supposed to run our 10k pace. I can’t remember the last time I ran a 10k. [...]

… light bulb

March 8, 2010

I’ve done enough long runs to know what not to do.  I could write a book or a blog or something with the vast amount of knowledge and experience I have had. I was baffled and frustrated by how tough Sundays run was.  Baffled but didn’t think why, what was so different, until Jeff asked [...]
